TEODORIC MAUSOLEUMThe Mausoleum of Theodoric in 1996 was included by UNESCO in the list of Italian heritage sites. It is the most famous funeral construction of the Ostrogoths, it was built in an uninhabited area, currently it is inserted in a park in the immediate vicinity of the city center. It was built by Teodorico the Great as his future tomb.Over 520. The construction is distinguished from all other architectures of Ravenna, built with blocks of Istrian stone, microcrystalline calcareous rock. The most striking feature of the building is the roof formed by a single and huge shell-shaped monolith, weighing about 230 tons. It was transported by sea and hoisted on the building through its twelve loops (even today one wonders how they managed to place it) Also outside there is a decorative band with a "pincer" motif, the only testimony to Ravenna of a decoration taken from the gothic orifices rather than the Roman-Byzantine one.
The area, known as PARCO TEODORICO, is one of the main parks of the city and is very popular with young people and families for sports and / or outdoor activities. partly with trees, areas equipped with games for children, a track for marbles, a basketball court and a rugby field, but above all paths for walking and jogging. There are obviously areas for rest and contemplation, such as a small complex used as a bar and services. At the center of the "monumental perspective" stands the silhouette of the Mausoleum of Theodoric on which all the visual lines of those who find themselves strolling inside this space converge.
